If you’re looking to give your kitchen a full remodelling, you’ll probably have to substantially dismantle your existing arrangements. While many people choose to get professional help in the dismantling and disposal of their kitchen, it can actually be a rather straightforward DIY task if you’re merely changing the units and not moving around the major utilities. If you’re inclined to see your kitchen remodel as an opportunity for a hands-on DIY project, there are a few essential things you need to remember.

Safety is an all-important concern and you’ll need to make sure your work environment is as safe as possible before you start dismantling. First of all, make sure that all circuits to the kitchen area are turned off and tape down the breakers to ensure they don’t inadvertently get turned back on. If it’s not clear which circuits go to which area on your fuse box, then either turn off all the power or call in a professional. It’s not worth the risk! Also, if you need to move any major utilities such as the dishwasher or cooker, it’s a good idea to shut off your gas and water supplies while you’re working.

Once you’ve prepared a safe work environment, it’s important to know where you’re going to put all the refuse and old units for disposal. That’s why it’s wise to hire something like a skip in advance to save yourself the hassle of dumping everything around the back or making multiple trips to the recycling centre in your car. Regardless of what you plan to do with the remnants of your old kitchen, it saves a lot of time if you have a convenient place to store them while you’re working.

It’s also vital that you avoid some of the most common mistakes that come with a DIY kitchen remodelling. For example, some people don’t allow themselves enough time to remodel and consequently haven’t made arrangements for a temporary kitchen space that can be used for basic cooking and cleaning. Also, it’s important to hang up plastic covers over doorways to stop dust and debris from making their way into your living or dining rooms. Both these mistakes can lead to unnecessary stress that may hold up the entire project.

The biggest mistake you could make, though, is to damage either your walls or units that you want to reuse in the dismantling process. In order to avoid this, it’s important to remove all doors and drawers before thinking about removing the units. Then start by dismantling the base units, as this will allow you easier access to those cabinets mounted on the wall. Units are normally either screwed or nailed into the wall. In the latter case, you should use a pry-bar to loosen the unit, while someone else holds the cabinet in place.

These are just some starting tips to help you make your DIY kitchen remodelling go smoothly. Remember, if you’re at all unsure about removing appliances, flooring or units, it’s a good idea to opt for professional help. A DIY project can quickly go wrong if mistakes are made, so more complex projects will likely benefit immeasurably from in-depth, expert advice.

For some people, it’s all too easy to find your kitchen units clogged up with multiple, half-finished packets of pasta or rice, or loose bits of cardboard from everyday packaging. This can start to fray the nerves, which is why it’s a great idea to use jars to store your essential foods and do away with all the unnecessary and annoying packages that they come in.

Jars offer an attractive way to store food, with many homeowners putting theirs on display to give their kitchen a homely feel. They also offer an easy way to keep things fresh, meaning that you can consolidate all your loose foodstuffs in a way which is both practical and convenient.

While it might seem both extravagant and overly experimental, interior lights actually offer a range of practical and aesthetic benefits.

With automatic lights inside your cupboards and drawers, there’ll be no more fumbling for the main kitchen light when you want a glass of water in the middle of the night. What’s more, the ethereal, atmospheric effect of interior lights can add a really distinctive note to your kitchen at relatively little cost.

Kitchen appliances are some of the greatest users of energy in the home at around 40% of total energy usage, so knowing how to choose those with the greatest efficiency is very important.

Size has a big impact on the amount of energy used, so it’s a good idea to choose appliances that are big enough to suit your needs, but not excessively large. Also, modern ovens don’t really require pre-heating, so it might be wise to upgrade older models. Finally, microwaves offer a much more efficient way to heat food than cookers, so consider investing in one if you find yourself using your oven frequently for this purpose.

As one of the most-used areas of the kitchen, the space around the sink is often in high demand. This means that’s it difficult to complete multiple sink-based tasks at the same time. Whether you need to soak a large dish or drain pasta, an over-used sink can throw your kitchen into disarray. So why not think about investing in a second one?

Second sinks work great as part of a kitchen island or if you’ve got a lot of under-utilised worktop space, and can add a whole new layer of convenience to your kitchen. While an extra sink might seem extravagant at first, you’ll likely wonder how you ever did without it in no time at all.

While your kitchen might not be the biggest in the world, that doesn’t mean it has to feel small. Your use of colour has a big impact on the impression of space within a room and, with the right combinations, you can make your kitchen look bigger than it really is.

A good starting point is to choose a colour scheme of light, muted colours, with pastels a popular option. These ‘contracting’ colours don’t impose upon a room, making it feel lighter and airier. Then, by picking a bolder colour for a single element in the room (like the blinds), you can draw the eye away from the rest of the kitchen, making the lack of space less noticeable.

These starting tips provide a simple way for you to boost your kitchen’s space with a minimum of effort.

Sometimes kitchen lighting can have the biggest impact when it’s put in the most unexpected places, and plinth lighting certainly offers a breathtaking way to give your kitchen a classic look. By fitting LED lights onto the plinths between your units and flooring, you can create a dramatic effect that will imbue your kitchen with instant atmosphere.

Plinth lights act as an attractive ambient light source that can give the kitchen the feel of a showroom in the evening, or provide a classy complement to other lights in the room. What’s more, plinth lights are perfect for showing off a stylish floor space, so if your kitchen features quality flooring, make sure that everyone notices.

For a lot of people, the bedroom is a place of relaxation and comfort. Creating the right aesthetic, therefore, is essential, and opting for a new set of wooden door handles could go a long way to making your bedroom the perfect space to unwind at the end of a long day.

How so? Because your choice of door handles plays a big role in the room’s atmosphere, the quality feel and rustic style of a wooden handle adds a traditional touch that helps to mellow the overall design. And considering the range of woods on offer, from rich mahogany to soft maple, you could add a gentle yet distinctive note to your existing bedroom doors. This means that wooden door handles can help introduce a hint of subtle luxury to your bedroom.
