What makes replacing kitchen doors so remarkable as a way of updating your kitchen is the huge range of finishes that they’re available in. Your doors can be in almost any colour, can resemble any kind of wood and can have several different kinds of surface texture. The choices are so numerous, in fact, that it can be difficult to get your head around all the different options available.

As a starting point to choosing your finish, it’s important to think of finishes as part of broader categories with different visual effects. Shiny gloss finishes, for example, have a clean, reflective look that is a natural fit in modern kitchens, while natural wood finishes have a softer effect suited to more traditional rooms. With this in mind, your search for the perfect finish will be more focused, efficient and effective.

One of the key features of great kitchen design is the way different elements of the kitchen just blend into the room’s overall aesthetic. That’s why curved kitchen doors offer such a fantastic option for those looking to add that subtle, unconventional touch to their kitchen.

Curved cabinet doors fit seamlessly with end units and kitchen island storage space, offering a stylish contrast to more ‘ordinary’ door designs. The discrete effect of curved doors means that you can draw attention away from your storage areas, helping to give your kitchen a hidden depth while emphasising the room’s more prominent elements.

There’s a huge range of different door designs out there, which means it can be difficult to make the right choice for your kitchen. Almost all door designs, however, fall into one of three basic categories, and knowing about these categories and their stylistic implications can help guide you in your search for the perfect design.

Flat designs, also known as ‘flush’, are free from any panelling or ornamentation and are suitable for kitchens requiring a more subtle finish. Shaker styles aim for depth with a sunken inner panel, and Panelled designs take this one step further with curved arches, bevelled panels and other ornamentations. Both look great in a more traditional or rustic kitchen, but with so much variation available within the different categories, there’s plenty of room to experiment and find a design that matches your kitchen’s wider aesthetic.

Contemporary kitchens are distinctive for their cutting-edge design and luxury aspects, and your choice of doors has a big say in the room’s final visual aesthetic. But what are the characteristics of contemporary-style doors and what designs make the greatest impact?

The essentials for this door style are high gloss and rich-wood finishes. The reflective, glossy surface helps to add a light, unimposing touch while the quality dark wood textures create a stylish contrast with the contemporary kitchen’s signature stainless steel.

Combined with a handleless door design which maximises the style’s sleek and subtle aesthetic, this type of door is perfect for achieving that contemporary effect. What’s more, this still leaves plenty of options open in terms of colour and wood type, meaning it’s simple to design a classic contemporary kitchen that’s personal to you.

PVC edged kitchen doors, bedroom doors and drawer fronts are made using MFC, which is Melamine Faced Chipboard. Usually both faces are melamine faced and there are many colours to choose from. MFC is the same material most kitchen or bedroom cabinets are made from. The doors or drawer fronts are cut from a large panel of MFC to the relevant smaller sizes and then edged in a 2mm or 3mm thick PVC edge all round along the four edges. This is done on a wood working machine called an edgebander, which automatically applies the glue and the PVC edge and trims off all excess to give a nice edge finish.

PVC is a general purpose plastic.
PET (Polyethylene Terephthalate) is a strong and lightweight type of polyester. It is used in the production of bottles for soft drinks, juices, alcoholic drinks, water, household cleaners and other food and non-food applications.
Kitchen or bedroom doors wrapped in Vinyl are really easy to keep clean, just use a damp cloth with some warm soapy water.

Comprehensively refitting your kitchen is a lovely idea, but it is not always the most realistic. The expensive involved in a full-scale kitchen redesign is sometimes too great to allow you to carry on with your project, but you can still spruce the room up a treat without resorting to such expensive methods.

It is often the case that you tire of the appearance of the kitchen before it reaches the end of its lifespan. Your kitchen units will last for years and years, so they don’t actually need replacing prematurely. Equally, your kitchen units are built to last from very durable materials that will withstand years of use.

However, just because your kitchen is still perfectly functional in its current state doesn’t mean you can’t modify it when you feel it needs a fresh look. All you need to do in this event is replace the parts of the kitchen that are the most visible.

Your kitchen worktops and kitchen doors account for the vast majority of the visible surface area in your kitchen, so by replacing these you can transform the room completely, without actually having to rip the whole kitchen out and start again from scratch.
