How to Turn a Room into a Walk-in Wardrobe

Walk-in wardrobes and dressing rooms are the epitome of luxury, but you don’t have to be a millionaire to have a walk in wardrobe. If you and your partner are always arguing about wardrobe space, or you’re constantly cramming clothes into a small wardrobe, then it’s time to look at changing that spare room into a walk-in wardrobe. With the right planning, preparation and budgeting you can build a walk-in closet that looks like it came right out of Sex and the City. Assess the Space

First things first – you need to assess the room you want to turn into your walk-in wardrobe.

  • Measure the room’s width and height.
  • Draw plans for how you want the finished project to look.
  • Organise your clothes into the groups you want to store them in – this will help you choose the storage and racks you need.
  • Select your colour scheme – play around with different shades and tones.
Think about the layout

If you’re sharing a walk-in closet with your beau, then the pair of you need to sit down and consider the type of layout you want. This is essential for future organisation of your wardrobe, and the last thing you need is sifting through your lingerie that’s been thrown in the trouser draw. So, communicate with each other and decide what spaces will be your own and what will be communal.

  • Separate what’s yours and your partners.
  • Look at what you and your partner will share.
  • Work out who will need more space.
  • Choose what wardrobe system you want.

Wardrobe systems fall under two different categories; wall mounted and floor mounted. A wall mounted wardrobe is fixed directly onto the wall. A floor mounted wardrobe is also fixed to the wall but gets most of its support from the floor. In some cases, floor mounted wardrobes look like built in cabinets.

Consider the Lighting

If you’ve got a walk-in wardrobe, you need some lighting that will make you look good! Whether you want your walk-in dressing room to have oodles of natural lighting from your window, or you desire a statement chandelier, it is something you need to think about. Don’t forget to illuminate separate components that are darker – strip lighting in shoe alcoves, and sparkling white lights above your jewellery will make your wardrobe look like it belongs in Hollywood!

  • Look at how much natural light your window provides.
  • Think about the lighting you would need to make the most of your walk-in wardrobe.
  • Search around for strip lighting and statement lighting.

Mirrors!

What’s the point in having a fancy new wardrobe without any mirrors to see how good you look? You don’t want the hassle of getting dressed in your dressing room and have to traipse all the way to your bedroom to see how you look.

  • Think about how many mirrors you want and where they will go.
  • Think about the size of the mirrors – do you want floor to ceiling mirrors? Do you need any desk mirrors as well?
Think about your window situation

The majority of rooms have windows, and if you’re transforming a small room into a walk-in wardrobe you need to make sure you’re not flashing your goods to the rest of your neighbourhood.

  • Look at getting window film that stops the outside looking in but still allows natural light.
  • Think about getting lace curtains to hang on your window – the light will still come in but you won’t get any peeping Toms!

Accessories and Decor!

A walk-in dressing room deserves some finery and glamour – whether you choose to have a bold coloured pouffé, velvet sofa or window seat, fun and exciting accessories will stop your dressing room from looking dark and drab!

  • Consider hanging images on the walls.
  • Look at adding faux flowers in a vase for a pop of colour.
  • Rugs add a splash of texture and colour into a room.
